BCAAsare comprised of three essentialamino acids, L-leucine, L-isoleucine and L-valine. They are essential for building and maintaining muscles, and work by facilitating the synthesis of proteins in the body. BCAAs are needed during times of physical stress, so are often used as bodybuilding and athletic supplements.

Preliminary evidence suggests that BCAA supplementation prior to exercise may help prevent muscle protein breakdown and improve recovery time after strenuous workouts. 

Most studies suggest the need for a high L-leucine content as this is the predominant amino broken down during bouts of intense exercise.
