Immune System

The body relies on numerous mechanisms to fight off bacteria, viruses and other foreign bodies. Almost all of this is regulated without conscious knowledge. From skin acting as the first line of defence, to antibodies killing off harmful bacteria, the body has a host of defences that comprise the immune system. However, sometimes these automated defences can have a hard time on their own. Nutrient deficiency can compromise immune strength and so sufficient intake of vitamins (particularly C, D and E) and minerals (think zinc and selenium) are essential to protect health and fight off nasty bugs. Poor gut health can also compromise the immune system, so probiotics are crucial in preventing this and maintaining immunity. Herbs such as Astragalus and Echinacea can boost immune health, as can other essential nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids..
