Magnesium is the fourth most abundant mineral in the human body. The body stores most of its Magnesium in the bones, with the remainder located in the muscles and soft tissues. Functionally, Magnesium is an essential component of over 300 essential enzyme reactions; and is an integral part of every major biological process. It assists with nerve conduction; and also supports blood vessel wall tone; nerve, heart and muscle function; and healthy bone density.
Signs of low Magnesium intake can be roughly divided into four categories:
Musculoskeletal signs may include muscle tension, twitches, soreness, weakness or cramps, recurrent migraines and tension headaches.
Smooth muscle contraction signs may include constipation and menstrual cramps.
Nervous system signs may include anxiety, predisposition to stress, restless sleep and mood imbalances.
Other signs may include pre-menstrual breast tenderness and cravings for sweet foods (especially chocolate).
Magnesium is one of the most common nutritional deficiencies. Common signs and symptoms relating to the musculoskeletal system include tense muscles, twitches, muscle soreness/weakness, cramps, spasms and tension headaches. Symptoms involving impaired smooth muscle contraction can include constipation and menstrual cramps, and cardiovascular symptoms may involve high blood pressure and palpitations. Anxiety, restless sleep and depression are common signs affecting the nervous system, and other general symptoms include breast tenderness and carbohydrate/sweet cravings, especially for chocolate.
Magnesium and Calcium exist in a delicate balance with each other in the body; and if Magnesium levels drop, Calcium levels will usually increase. The body relies on the right Magnesium / Calcium balance to tense and relax muscles properly. This means that low Magnesium levels can sometimes lead to muscles that remain tense, or that twitch and cramp. Additionally, Magnesium appears to help to “switch off” some of the nerve cell receptors that are involved in the experience of pain. This may be why Magnesium has been shown to be so effective for muscle aches, as well as for cramps, spasms and tension.
The body uses Magnesium as part of its natural bone building process. In this capacity, Magnesium helps the bones to absorb Calcium from the bloodstream, so that new bone tissue can form. Magnesium also assists the hormones that control the way the body metabolises Calcium.
