In earlier centuries, an all-vegetable based soap was made in the Castile region of Spain from local olive oil. By the turn of this century, "Castile" had come to mean any vegetable oil-based soap, versus animal (tallow) fat-based soap. Melrose Castile Soaps are a pure and simple liquid soap, not a complex blend of detergents. Many commercial blends are labelled as "Liquid Soap" even when they contain absolutely no soap whatsoever. You may notice that some batches of Melrose Castile Soap are darker than others. The reason for this is that we use unrefined organic oils; they are not bleached, and therefore can vary in colour. Some vegetable oils also contain a small percentage of waxes, lecithin and other matter that do not dissolve in the reaction to make soap. This may make the soap appear cloudy

Melrose has a proud history of 30 years working to supply healthy, organic and sustainable products.
It is a concern to our customers to see Melrose using Palm Oil as this oil has come under significant criticism regarding habitat destruction and threat to biodiversity. The fate of the Orang-utan is a main feature of this concern. Melrose only sources its Organic Palm Oil from Daabon in Colombia, South America. No Orang-utans live in South America and the palm oil is grown in a chemical free, organically certified and sustainable system. Daabon has been a foundation member of the international "Roundtable of Sustainable Palm Oil" (RSPO). The goal of RSPO members is to jointly develop legal, technical, ecological and social criteria to promote the sustainable manufacture and use of palm oil. One particular aspect is to ensure that the farming of palm oil plantations is compatible with the protection of the rain forests and their biodiversity. The RSPO working groups have devised criteria to rate the quality of sustainability in the production of palm oil products.
These criteria include products only being permitted from areas placed under cultivation prior to 2005 (old-stock plantations) or, if placed under cultivation subsequent to 2005, the previous land use must have been taken into consideration and an examination as well as an exclusion of existing, natural areas in particular need of protection must have been performed. These criteria are being applied on a trial basis and will become increasingly binding in the manufacture of palm oil product. Melrose supports and promotes the aims of the RSPO which to a large extent are aligned with the philosophy of Melrose.
What is the pH? - All true soaps have a pH of between 9.5 and 10.
Why is the soap sometimes cloudy? - Some vegetable oils contain a small percentage of waxes, lecithin and other unsaponifiable matter that do not dissolve in the reaction to make soap. These remain and eventually float to the top.
Why are some batches darker than others? - Unrefined Organic oils are not bleached and vary in colour. The presence of minute traces of iron also results in the soap darkening with age.
Ingredients: Purified Water, Potassium soaps of Organic Olive Oil, Organic Flaxseed Oil, Organic Palm Olein (Columbia), Organic Sunflower Oil, Organic Glycerin, Organic Orange Oil, Citric Acid
Directions: For everyday body-washing: Pour several drops of soap undiluted onto wet hands, washcloth or loofah, clean all over for the freshest, cleanest feeling possible.
For Cleaning: Dilute from one part soap into 40 parts water for light cleaning. Use it undiluted for heavy-duty grease-cutting jobs.
For Laundry: Use 1/4 cup to 1/3 cup for one regular load; adjust as needed depending on the hardness of your water. Adding a dash of bicarbonate of soda makes it even better.
