Eczema is a form of dermatitis which means ‘inflammation of the skin’. More that 4 million Australians will suffer from various degrees of eczema. Eczema (atopic dermatitis) is not contagious but may be hereditary. Dependent on the person internal and external factors which contribute include medication, food, alcohol, stress, smoking, chemicals, weather conditions, air-conditioning and allergens.

You should seek medical advice for this condition if:

• there are signs of infection, such as a weeping area or puss;


• the skin is broken;


• the skin is very red and inflamed;


• there is a burning or hot sensation;


• the rash is spreading or lasts for more than 3 weeks;


• there are vesicles (little pimples with clear fluid);


• the area has white patches or silvery scales;


• the skin has become tough and leathery; or


• the person affected is a child.

Psoriasis cannot be caught from other people, nor can it be transferred from one part of the body to another. It is thought to be a genetically inherited disease. Psoriasis is a chronic, autoimmune disease that appears on the skin. The most common areas affected by psoriasis include the scalp, knees, elbows, hands and feet, but the condition can occur anywhere on the body.

The three hallmarks of a plaque of psoriasis are: thickened skin, red skin and skin scales. The thickness of a plaque (a raised skin lesion more than 1cm in diameter which can be felt) can vary from barely perceptible to several millimeters thick. They range in color from a faint pink to deep beefy red. In patients with darker skin types, there may be less redness and more darkening of the skin. Scales can range from virtually absent to thick oyster-shell like adherent plates.

It's a chronic skin disorder that is characterized by periodic flare-ups of well defined, red patches covered by a silvery, flaky skin on the body. Those with psoriasis need to take special care in selecting toiletries. Ingredients in some soaps, shampoos, deodorants, perfumes and colognes can bother sensitive skin.

Psoriasis can occur at any point in the lifespan, affecting children, teenagers, adults and older people. It affects males and females equally.

The Geoff Graham Story

Geoff was reported as one of the worst cases of eczema as a 3 month old baby in the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne, Australia.
