Antioxidants are a group of nutritional compounds found in plants (most often brightly- coloured fruits and vegetables, but sometimes also in herbs or other plant life) that help to protect the body against cell damage from unstable molecules called “free radicals”. Different types of antioxidants help to protect the body against different types of free radicals, so it is important to eat a wide variety of antioxidant-rich foods to help minimise overall free radical damage.
Free radicals are unstable molecules that the human body can create when it is exposed to pollution, alcohol, cigarette smoke, sunlight, stress, a poor diet or sometimes just as part of its own normal metabolic processes.
