Antioxidants are a group of nutritional compounds found in plants (most often brightly- coloured fruits and vegetables, but sometimes also in herbs or other plant life) that help to protect the body against cell damage from unstable molecules called “free radicals”. Different types of antioxidants help to protect the body against different types of free radicals, so it is important to eat a wide variety of antioxidant-rich foods to help minimise overall free radical damage.
Free radicals are unstable molecules that the human body can create when it is exposed to pollution, alcohol, cigarette smoke, sunlight, stress, a poor diet or sometimes just as part of its own normal metabolic processes. Chronic inflammation – especially in the joints, nervous system or heart tissue – can also produce free radical molecules.
Once they have formed, free radicals can cause a kind of damage called oxidative stress that weakens the body’s cells. This damage may contribute to several common health conditions and further exacerbate any inflammation. Antioxidant nutrients work by helping to neutralise free radicals into a form that the body can eliminate. Because the body is continually exposed to free radicals, fresh antioxidants need to be continually taken in through the diet from a broad range of fruit and vegetables.
As customers grow older, the cells in various areas of their bodies (especially in the brain, nervous system, heart, joints and thyroid gland) can become more susceptible to oxidative stress and free radical damage. At the same time, their digestion may decline, so their bodies may not absorb all the antioxidant nutrients (e.g. Selenium, Betacarotene and Vitamins C and E) they need to protect their cells from oxidative stress.
In such cases, many customers find that increasing their daily intake of these antioxidant nutrients supports their body in producing the natural enzymes that combat free radical damage, which assists with their overall wellbeing.
Selenium: An essential trace mineral that acts as a powerful antioxidant to protect the body from the damaging effects of free radicals. It also helps to maintain immunity and heart health; and supports healthy joints and cholesterol levels.
Betacarotene: A natural plant compound that the body can convert to Vitamin A as required. Betacarotene is naturally found in yellow or orange fruits and vegetables (e.g. carrots, yams, mangos) and in dark green leafy vegetables (e.g. spinach and kale). The body uses Vitamin A to maintain healthy vision, skin and membranes.
Vitamin C: Often called “The Immunity Vitamin”, Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that protects against the free radical damage that can increase the body’s susceptibility to infections. It also plays an important role in helping the body to produce collagen – a key protein in skin, joints, bones, teeth, tendons and ligaments – which means it supports skin health and wound healing.
Vitamin E: A fat-soluble vitamin that supports skin and heart health. Vitamin E provides powerful antioxidant protection for the cells that line artery walls, which helps to help maintain a healthy cardiovascular system.
