Glutamine is a conditionally essential amino acid. That means that whilst your body can usually synthesise it on its own, in times of increased stress it needs to be consumed in the diet. These times of stress can include increased physical activity, a compromised immune system or during sickness. Glutamine is a key component of the important antioxidant glutathione, which prevents free radicals causing damage to human cells. Glutamine also plays a key role in the synthesis of muscle (think recovery and growth), the immune system and gut health. Glutamine can be consumed in powder form by adding it to your favourite beverage. During intense physical activity or sickness, look to consume 10-20g every day.
